Harvest Festival
Farmers’ Dance in St. Martin bei Lofer

A plethora of experiences and treats await you in the state of Salzburg during Harvest Festival time, between 28 August and 24 October.

The multifaceted and colourful cultural landscape and the lively traditions of the Salzburg farmers are the cornerstone for the wide offering during the Harvest Festival.

The Harvest Festival is a festive season: A different town each week celebrates its particular festival with a farmers’ market, rural crafts, village music and autumn delights with the innkeepers. The whole village participates. Get infected with the merriness and just celebrate with us!

  • Farmers’ market, learn about the specialities of our farmers.
  • Guided hikes to the farms, a chance to get an insight in their life.
  • Experience that unparalleled flair in Autumn, the gaudy forests in their colorful dress.
  • Enjoy the idyll and the mild climate.
  • Very cheap low season prices!

The Harvest Festival is mainly harvest time. Look how rowan berries are distilled to make schnapps and how compote is made from apples. Enjoy typical Salzburg Schmankerl am Hof: How would it be with "Knoflaks", "Bauerngeselchtem" or "Raspberry Liquor"? A hefty snack from own products is available directly from the farmers.

The Harvest Festival is a cultural tradition: The bringing in of the harvest is particularly celebrated based on old tradition. In many places, the thanksgiving includes a festive procession with the artistically decorated harvest crown.

Rural crafts being presented at the Alm Output / Almabtrieb
During the yard feasts, harvest festivals and also alm output festivities – the musicians are ever present, playing for the guests and locals. The crafts are a lively tradition, and can be admired in many places during the harvest festival time. Have you ever seen the making of wood shingles, quill embroidery or alm wreath binding?
Many of these old traditions are a well-preserved cultural asset and also presented in the numerous local history museums in a loving and visual way.

Entrance to the local history museums is free in participating villages during Harvest Festival time!

The homey guesthouses in the Salzburg region are setup in a "down-to-earth" way during the Harvest Festival. The region’s rural products are refined to a Harvest Festival Schmankerl based on “Grandma’s Cookbook”. We recommend that you also taste the spicy Harvest Festival cheese and Harvest Festival beer! Apart from the culinary delights, even conviviality plays an important role during the Harvest Festival. The Weisenbläser or the Tanzlmusi play for their own joy, for the pleasure of locals and the guests. Nothing is “constructed” for tourists – but everyone is welcome during the earthy and pristine events.

Lust for Culture?
Many village and rural cultural sites invite you for discovery during the Harvest Festival: How would it be with a visit to the baioaren homestead, the 500-year old smoke house, a water mill still in operation, or a free entrance to the local history museum?
